About Mr Chan Toh Heng
Chong Hoe’s founder, the late Mr Chan Toh Heng, was an immigrant from China. Born into a traditional medicine family, it was natural for Mr Chan to dedicate his life towards learning and practising the traditional art of healing.
In 1955, Mr Chan and his wife walked for 7 days from their hometown to the port. They had with them their son, then 5 years old, and a suitcase of belongings. They had decided to migrate to Singapore in pursuit of a better quality of life but little did they know that life was going to be equally hard here. He did various odd jobs and helped out in local medical halls, working tirelessly to earn a living and support his growing family.
The Chong Hoe story began when Mr Chan set up a humble family-run medical hall in Serangoon Gardens in the year 1957. He named his clinic Chong Hoe (中和) as a reminder to himself and his family about the importance of “life in harmony”, that moderation is the key to longevity and to always be at peace, both within ourselves and with those around us.
<中庸>：
“喜怒哀乐之未发，谓之中，发而皆中节，谓之和。
中也者，天下之大本也，和也者，天下之达道也。
致中和，天地位焉，万物育焉。“
Mr Chan believes that quality healthcare should be made accessible to all. He devoted his time and effort into sourcing, selecting, processing and providing herbs of the best quality to his patrons. In the many years to come, his medical hall grew to become a trusted source of authentic herbs and he gradually made a name for himself as a TCM physician who genuinely cared for his patients.

The Chong Hoe Story
As the oldest standing store in Serangoon Gardens, Chong Hoe is a familiar name and sight to many. The surroundings may have changed, but Chong Hoe remains pretty much the same: down to earth and grounded.
Mr Chan’s siblings, children and grandchildren have inherited and carried on his legacy. The multigenerational family of physicians is a rare sight in the local scene and has since received extensive media coverage. The family has nurtured close to 20 outstanding TCM physicians. To date, 14 are still practising, each of them boasting 13 to 50 years of clinical experience. The business has also grown to include more than 6 medical halls and clinics locally.
